FastTracker... "the lightning-fast way to find a bolo game"
I wrote this in about a day as a quick method for finding Bolo games. With
just a keystroke, you can find a list of current games on the Internet;
with another, you can launch Bolo with the game information on the Clipboard.
Version History
v1.1 -
Fixed Open Connection crash that hosed the machine! (Finally)
Re-wrote many functions, such as server connection, etc.
Fixed short timeout problem, and it will try to connect several times.
Added Server dialog, to let you pick which server you prefer to contact.
Option-clicking Server dialog => About dialog.
Fixed annoying watch cursor problem in Finder.
Added "Rebuild Desktop" Alert if it can't Find Bolo
Cmd-Shift-5 with Caps Lock active will launch Bolo directly (you wont
have to pick a game or see the dialog to run bolo)
Bundled Cmd-Shift-7 FKEY for setting sound volume!
v1.01 & v1.01e -
Updates to fix a problem when unable to connect to the server.
Compiled a special version to contact the EuroTracker.
v1.0 - Initial Release
How it works
The file comes as a Font Suitcase file. There are 3 groups of people out there:
* System 7.1 or later: Drop it in your Fonts Folder (or just onto the
System Folder). Suitcases in the Fonts Folder are treated just like they
are installed into the System file proper... a great way to install and
remove resource files, like Fonts or FKEY's.
* System 7.0x: Install it into your System file with ResEdit. Make sure
you bring all resources in the suitcase along except the 'vers' resource.
* System 6 users: Sorry, its time to get a System clue. System 7 rox!
Once you have loaded the FKEY, you dont need to restart. Just type Cmd-Shift-5
from any program, including the Bolo startup dialog. The FastTracker dialog
will come up and give you the latest information. (Remember, you need MacTCP
to use FastTracker and to play Internet Bolo).
To remove the FKEY from the Fonts Folder, you need to quit all programs but the
Finder. Its a quirk in the way the system protects you... so just do it. Once
all apps are gone, you just drag it out of the Fonts Folder. Voila... deinstalled.
What it does
As the computer runs its software, it allows you to type special keys to activate
built in features... like disk ejecting (Cmd-Shift-1 or Cmd-Shift-2) and screen
capture (Cmd-Shift-3). By installing the new FKEY, you are able to use this
feature anywhere also.
The FKEY opens a quick connection to MikeE's tracker (the GWU address is no longer
hard-coded), downloads the game list, and displays it. If there is a difficulty
with MacTCP or with the server, you will be informed that an error occured. Now,
parsing the text that the Tracker sends is not easy, and the software is kinda
dependant on well-formated data. If you see odd game addresses or something, you
should look on the net for an updated version. Until MikeE settles on a rigid
way to advertise game info, it has to be touch and go.
If you leave the "Run Bolo" box checked, the FKEY will do a quick hard disk search
for the latest version of Bolo, and launch it. When the ability to pass along game
info is added to Bolo, it wont be Copy and Paste anymore. Remember, if someone
is not playing on Port 50000, then you have to enter the proper port number in by
hand... there is no easy way to do this.
Also, you can now set the Caps Lock key before invoking the FKEY, and it will
simply run Bolo with no user interface. The ultimate for us addicts... a Bolo
Hotkey!
What it doesn't do
If it aint in there, it probably wont be for a while. I wrote this as an exercise
for contacting MikeE's tracker for incorporation into the application Internet
Tracker, whose version 2.0 is now indefinitely delayed. I think all the bugs are
gone, and I did add *numerous* key equivalents. I think its SE compatible... it ran
the one time I tested it.
Other notes
The only other thing I can think of is that there is another useful FKEY that
we use at UMich (well, CAEN) alot. Its the ToggleSndVol FKEY, and its now
included with FastTracker. It lets you set the volume quickly with the
Cmd-Shift-7 key sequence. It is small and useful, esp for people who play
loud games. Best of all, it's free! (I am not the author, but the FKEY is
simple enough and the authors name is in there).
Share and Enjoy... the software is free to everyone. Bolo On!
